Grown on the family owned and operated, Carolina Plantation farm in Darlington, SC, these heirloom red cowpeas are also called field peas or crowder peas. Brought from Central Africa to the West Indies and later introduced into the Carolinas in the 1600's. Today, cowpeas (Field Peas) are a popular item in Southern and Gullah cooking. Often paired with Gold Rice, the peas make up the famous Hoppin' John, traditionally served on New Years Day and also enjoyed throughout the entire year.
