Description

The history of rice in America began in 1685, when a damaged trade ship sailing from Africa put into Charlestown for repairs. The ship’s captain provided a small quantity of rice to a local resident who began planting this new crop. Rice cultivation quickly developed into South Carolina’s largest cash crop and was grown extensively throughout Charleston and the Lowcountry for more than 200 years.

Rice brought great wealth to many planters and merchants in the region, and Charleston became a major port exporting rice to markets throughout Europe and Asia. After the Civil War, Lowcountry rice cultivation declined significantly due to rising labor costs, hurricanes, increased competition, and changing economic conditions. By the early 1900s, commercial rice production in the Lowcountry had largely disappeared, and the heirloom Carolina Gold rice that made the region famous had nearly been lost.

Today, Charleston Gold Rice carries on this heritage. Charleston Gold is a hybrid seed bred from the heirloom Carolina Gold rice and an aromatic white rice variety. The result is a medium-grain rice that cooks with a rich, nutty, buttery aroma similar to aromatic rice, while maintaining the slightly sticky texture that made Carolina Gold so prized in traditional Lowcountry cooking.

This rice is grown in South Carolina on land once used for historic rice cultivation and irrigated by the Pee Dee River. Take a step back in time and enjoy this unique Lowcountry product.
