Description

Wadmalaw Island Green Tea American Classic Tea bags from Charleston's Tea Garden. Locally grown green tea. The Tea is grown, processed, and packed on Wadmalaw Island, a short distance from Charleston, South Carolina. Box of 12 individually packaged pyramid tea bags.

Green Tea and Black Tea are both harvested from the Camellia sinensis plant. The difference is in the way the tea leaves are processed. Black tea is harvested, rolled, and then left to oxidize as it dries, while green leaves are not allowed to oxidize, allowing the green color to remain. This oxidation changes the flavor of the tea leaves. Green teas typically have a grassy type flavor.

The first tea plants (Camellia Sinensis) were brought to the United States from China in the 1700s. In 1888, the first successful tea plantation in the United States was founded in Summerville, SC, a short distance from Charleston. Years later, these tea plants would be transplanted to a new site on Wadmalaw Island on what would later be known as the Charleston Tea Garden. Today, the tea plants flourish on 127 acres, making it one of the very few American-grown teas available and a unique part of Charleston’s culture and heritage.
